Into The Nothing by BT Urruela

To say I have been looking forward to this book would be an understatement. I loved reading “A Lover’s Lament” by BT and KL Grayson, and I was beyond excited when I heard BT was coming out with his own book.

So, without further ado, here is the synopsis:

Xander Evans has been on the road for many years. Never settling. Always moving from one place to another, unable to let go of his past. He lived a tragic childhood, spending most of those years in foster care. He’s never felt like he’s had a home.

That is until he stops in the small town of Truman Valley, Missouri, where he meets a woman who will change everything he’s ever known.

Paige Watson has it all. A loving family, beautiful home, and a great career. The only thing she’s missing….is love. After escaping an abusive relationship, she opens her heart up to a stranger. He is unlike any man she’s ever met. He came into her life and turned it completely upside down. Everything is perfect. That is, until one fateful night.

A night that would tear the Watson family apart, never to be put back together again.

A night that would send Xander away to prison for life.

I’m trying to find a really eloquent way to say this but I haven’t come up with one in the few minutes that I’ve sat here, but BT fucking gutted me within the first couple chapters. I felt so bad for Teresa. With that said, I thought it was a smart way to start for a few reasons. First, it was unique. But it also piqued my interest. I kept wondering if Xander really did this, and then subsequently, I kept wondering who else it may have been.

Paige and Xander meeting and the beginnings of their relationship are great. It was so light, flirtatious, exciting. I loved seeing them spend time with Paige’s family and friends, and how they interacted together. But things start to change.

I am honestly conflicted on parts of this story. I liked the overall plot. I thought BT did a great job at weaving in love, conflict, and mystery. I think I would have liked to see more development of Paige and Xander. Both had a lot of history that I think needed just a little more time to hear about. Not excessive but an extra couple chapters would have made it a bit easier to see and understand their individual backstories.

The ending of the book is heartbreaking. Seeing what appears to be a perfect family completely shattered was horrible. Again, I’m really torn on this. A part of me wished for more emotion from Paige, in regards to the last chapters of the book. But at the same time, I also feel like Paige was moving on and she needed to move on. She couldn’t just stay and wallow in her own sorrows.

I think some of the best books that are out there cause you to feel angry, hurt, conflicted. Even if I don’t like something, but it got a strong reaction out of me, I feel like the author accomplished their goal. With this story, BT managed to make me feel elated, sorrowful, heartbroken and hopeful all in one book. I am truly looking forward to what he comes out with in the future.

The Man, The Game, The Baby by London Casey

They hired her to keep me out of jail. Now she’s carrying my baby…

Roman Knight. You know the name. You know the reputation… on and off the field. There’s not a pass I can’t complete or a woman I can’t charm. I’m the highest paid quarterback in the league. But I’m one bar fight away from jail. Now my people have hired some lawyer to try to control me. Yeah, right. I know she’s going to last about as long as all my other lawyers.

Right up until I meet her.

As soon as I lay eyes on Willow, I know I have to have her… in my bed and in my life. I always get what I want, and this time, I end up with a little more than planned. Willow is pregnant… and if that’s not shocking enough, a late night incident results in a murder charge being thrown my way. I’m left with a choice – rat on an old friend or go to jail.

If I want a real life, and a family… I’m going to have to fight for it.

I was able to snag an ARC from Karolyn James, who uses the pen name London Casey. I was definitely intrigued by the synopsis of the book.

Roman starts off seeming like a bit of a psychopath. Willow just seems harsh. If I’m being totally truthful, I was not really fond of either character in the first 20% of the book. HOWEVER, once the author really brings us further into Roman and Willow, and their lives, you start to see how awesome they are.

Roman is a NFL Quarterback who is at the top of his game professionally, but his personal issues keep causing him trouble. Roman is a fighter and its shocking to see how he manages to get himself into trouble at every turn. And I do mean, every SINGLE turn.

Willow is a lawyer who thinks she is being terminated. She’s actually being recruited as another member of Roman’s legal team and she is supposed to babysit him, more or less. In the legal settings, Willow is the only woman surrounded by men. When I mention Willow seeming harsh, you can see why she needs to be in this environment. Her character can dish it out just as well as she can take it.

I have to say that while I initially didn’t care for Willow or Roman, I did appreciate that the author made them real people. In reality, we don’t always love everyone or we don’t always say or do the right thing. That’s really how Willow and Roman are.

Roman has a lot of past issues from his childhood, and they are actual, legitimate issues. I admired that the author chose to tackle that. So many books have this trope of past issues, secrets, etc. Roman does share with Willow, but he does it once he knows he can trust her. It is not because she found out accidentally and its now some huge crevice in their relationship.

The sex in this book is incredibly steamy. Roman and Willow definitely have a hot connection. I appreciated that Willow’s character is a woman who enjoys sex herself. At one point in the beginning, Willow has a one-night stand (this is before she knows Roman). This is something she does on her own. Its not that she meets someone and she hoped for more and it was only a one-night stand. She actually initiates it. The sex seemed to be far more intense with a woman like Willow who knew what she wanted, not just the man initiating the sex.

Another aspect I liked was that I felt this book was really about Roman and his growth. Yes, we do see Willow a lot and we see her falling in love with Roman. But she does not have the hurdles to overcome like Roman does. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Roman grow, mature, but also confront some of the issues he has.

I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you enjoy sports romances. It was well done and I felt like Roman and Willow were a very special couple that I will not easily forget.

#Jerk by Kat T. Masen

So I found this book randomly. The author had posted in group I’m in on Facebook, looking for some people to read and review this book. I am not familiar with the author or anything else she has written (as a side note: I secretly enjoy this since you don’t go in with preconceived ideas).

Here’s the book’s synopsis:

He was that boy in the playground.
The one that pulled your pigtails.
The one that lifted your dress in front of the entire school.
Now he’s that guy in the office.
The one that steals your lunch from the fridge.
The one that gets away with everything.
I’m sure you know him. Everyone knows that guy.
He’s a #JERK.

Presley Malone knew her relationship with her fiancé, Jason, had run its course.
The second that ring came off her finger, she didn’t expect to be the pawn in an immature game played by the office jerk.

His name is Haden Cooper, and he is six years younger than her. Immature and irresponsible, getting drunk and stoned every weekend like he never left college. He rode a motorcycle, carrying a different girl each week. He was everything a jerk should be—insensitive, unreliable, and most importantly, a heartbreaker.

Haden enjoyed playing games, and when it came to Presley Malone, it was all too easy. Miss Know-it-all with her over-the-top OCD was soon going to get a taste of what it was like to live on the edge.

But what starts off as an innocent prank soon becomes an unhealthy obsession.

He is wrong for her and she is wrong for him. It’s a battle of the sexes ready to go to war. But in this battle there are no winners, and it takes only one fateful night and six tequilas for their lives to take an unexpected turn that changes them both forever.

My first impressions of Presley were that she was intense. She just seemed very intense in everything she did. Work, cleaning, being annoyed, etc. I actually saw some of myself in Presley. I felt a lot of her emotions were beautifully expressed. I felt like I could have been there with her, listening to her tell me what was on her mind.

Haden, on the other hand, was absolutely annoying. I don’t know how Presley didn’t murder him. I totally would have. That blouse incident. Ugh…HADEN!!!

In the beginning, I didn’t realize that Haden had feelings for Presley. I really did think he was just annoyed and having some of his male ego issues. Then as the story moves along, its totally obvious that he has these feelings for her. I don’t want to give spoilers, but I did not see Presley and Haden being connected in the way they are. I was shocked.

I felt this story was utterly intoxicating. I actually stayed up all night reading it and then messaged the author at 5am (American time). The author did such a good job capturing the emotions that Presley was going through. I know I may be biased since I really felt like I aligned with Presley, but it was just incredible. This book had me in tears several times, had me feeling relieved, shocked. It was just a mountain of emotions.  An entire mountain range, really.

I would absolutely recommend this book. I found myself thinking about it constantly, hence the all-nighter to finish it. I can’t wait to check out more from the author!
