Blow by Heidi McLaughlin

Blow by Heidi McLaughlin

Meet the complicated men behind the sexiest boy band in America! In Blow, the start of an emotionally charged series from bestselling author Heidi McLaughlin, an insatiable heartthrob gets blinded by the spotlight—and learns to fight for love.

Bodhi McKnight has always had everything handed to him on a silver platter: fame, success, money, girls. The raven-haired, blue-eyed hottie is the son of Hollywood A-listers, and when he’s asked to join the boy band Virtuous Paradox, his star shoots even higher. But so do expectations, leading Bodhi down a destructive path of addiction—until a drop-dead gorgeous guardian angel shows him her sizzling brand of tough love.

When Bodhi ends up in rehab, he doesn’t expect to meet someone as cool and down-to-earth as Kimberly Gordon. Although he’s enjoyed the company of beautiful, charming women before, none of them have tried to get to know the “real” Bodhi. But Kimberly isn’t fazed by his stardom. She’d rather go horseback riding, teach Bodhi to play guitar, or ask him about his feelings. Soon Bodhi realizes he’s fallen head over heels for her. He just hopes that he’s strong enough to protect what they have from all the pressures and temptations of the outside world.

This book was so many things. Amazing, eye-opening, heartbreaking, unexpected. I hope I do justice with this review because I really loved this book.

I’m trying to phrase this a certain way but I keep doing it wrong, so I’ll say this: this author absolutely nailed addiction and how it can affect people. We see Bodhi go through a lot in this book; from being on a month long cocaine bender to severe withdrawls and back to being healthy. Its an incredible journey and its written beautifully.

One scene that I can’t stop thinking about is when Bodhi is having hallucinations. The scene is overwhelming and, as the reader, you really don’t realize that Bodhi is having the hallucination until things seem too weird to be real. The reason that scene stands out to me is because the hallucination overtakes both Bodhi and the reader so quickly. I could feel his panic and terror as I read that scene.

As a blogger, I read a lot of books (obviously). I try to stay impartial but at times, I do start to guess where a story is going. This book was truly enjoyable to read for me because while the author stayed true to romance and the rockstar love story concept, she managed to turn things around so the story stayed fresh. I can say with absolute confidence that I haven’t read a book like this before.

This book made me have a lot of admiration and respect for Heidi McLaughlin. She tackled the subject of addiction and did it flawlessly. She also managed to take ideas that we might already have read and twist and turn them many different ways. The reason this is so special is that she wrote this in such a way that its entirely different and everything still makes total sense.

I have so much more I want to say but if I keep going, I will end up giving you the whole story. This is one of my all-time favorite stories. Hands down. I cannot recommend this story enough. Even as I am wrapping up my review, I can’t stop thinking about how much I enjoyed this book and I am resisting the urge to keep going on and on about all the different little facets that I admired. This book is a definite must-read!

Lucky Chase by Milly Taiden

Lucky Chase by Milly Taiden

Event planner for the rich and famous, Lucky Nuñez lives her dream job. But when it comes to love, she’s scraping the bottom of the barrel. She’s dying to have babies, but it seems that’s never going to happen. A chance encounter leads her into the arms of Jared Thomas. He’s a bad boy to the bone. Sexy, seductive, and so domineering, he makes her toes curl. And he’s got dirty talk down to an art form.

Jared Thomas is a ladies’ man, but when he meets sexy Lucky, he knows she’s worthy of more than just play time. Never has he wanted to keep a woman like he does her. He will make her his wife and mother of his children. There’s only one problem: his past is trying to kill his future.

They have more than communication problems playing havoc with their relationship. With trust issues the size of Texas, these two need to open up to each other. That’s if they can stay alive long enough to try.

NOTE TO READERS: This book was previously published as Lucky Break under a small press. It has since been re-edited and 15k words added to enhance the story.

So I am sort of freaking out here, everyone. I absolutely LOVE Milly Taiden and have for awhile. I’ve read most of her work, but since my blog has come out, I haven’t had a chance to review any of her books for my blog. But that changes now! EEK!

If you’re familiar with Milly Taiden, you know she has dirty talk down pat. I can say that in some books, that dirtiness can sometimes be off putting, but somehow, Milly Taiden can make some crazy stuff sound so erotic and sexy. Our hero in this story, Jared Thomas, is no different. He is this very sexy alpha male, and he meets Luciana aka Lucky, over a game of cards. I actually loved how the author incorporated the act of playing cards in. There was so much sexual tension and innuendo in talking about the game, the betting. It was a fantastic and very natural dynamic for the characters to interact in.

Lucky’s been burned in her past relationships and while she is extremely attracted to Jared, she isn’t entirely sure of him. Jared also has past issues with an ex that come back to haunt him and Lucky. It was an interesting twist to the story and while I liked it, there was a part of me that felt it wasn’t entirely necessary. The one thing I will say is that Milly Taiden books usually have some conflict but I love that the conflict doesn’t overtake the story. This book is no different.

I discovered Milly Taiden quite awhile ago now, but ironically it was while I was trying out Kindle Unlimited (which I no longer use). But this book IS on KU, as are other titles from Milly Taiden, so if you’ve been wanting to check out her books, this is a fantastic way to get your hands on them!

Regardless, I would recommend this book. Milly Taiden is one of my all-time favorites. She is one of the few authors where I can one-click and not even know what I’m reading about and know I will love it.

Just An Illusion: Side A by D. Kelly

Just An Illusion: Side A by D. Kelly

One night changed her life…

Bestselling author Amelia Greyson has grown up in the music industry and isn’t the slightest bit fazed by fame or celebrities. However, when she attends a Bastards and Dangerous concert with her best friend Belle, her world shifts on its axis.

Double trouble…

Sawyer and Noah Weston are the front men of BAD. They’re fraternal twins and sexy as sin. When they hear the author of The O Factor is in their green room, they’re intrigued. She’s just the person they need to write their farewell story. The brothers offer Amelia the opportunity of a lifetime, which she reluctantly accepts.

Three hearts…

Noah is sweet and considerate, working hard to make Amelia feel at home on the road. Unfortunately, the closer they get, the more obnoxious Sawyer becomes. Sawyer is arrogant and distant and he wants Amelia, even though she’s not his for the taking. Only during stolen moments does Sawyer show her who he really is.

Can Amelia maintain a safe distance from Sawyer and keep her heart intact? Or will she shatter Noah’s heart by giving hers to his brother instead?

Just an Illusion – Side A is the first book in The Illusion Series
*Mature Content- This book contains situations not intended for persons under the age of 18. Including, but not limited to – open door sex, cursing, alcohol and/or drug use, and possible triggers.*

So I am somewhat obsessed with this cover. I think its the colors (and maybe the handsome guy on the front…he helps a bit). But in all seriousness, I think this cover is just stunning.

Our story stars with a pretty epic prologue. It somewhat tells you what you are dealing with, but you still need to read on to get the full story. I will tell you right now this book does in a cliffhanger and Side B will be out in early 2017.

I keep trying to come up with the rights words for this review but I’m really struggling. This book is beyond interesting and also really well-written.

There are some intricacies to Amelia aka Mel but even though some of it threw me off, it did made sense for the story. One thing we learn about Amelia is that her family has a history with music, but we don’t entirely know what has happened. She likes to keep her true identity hidden, so when she first meets Sawyer and Noah Weston, they don’t have any idea of her past.

Noah and Sawyer are fraternal twin brothers, but they couldn’t be more different. Noah is kind and sweet. Sawyer is rough and harsh. One thing I really liked was how Amelia isn’t fazed by the guys at all. She isn’t a fan of their music and really isn’t impressed by them. This is actually one of the main reasons the guys want Amelia to write a book about their last year of touring. She isn’t biased towards them in any way. But even from the start, its very obvious that Noah and Sawyer are both very attracted to Mel.

The author really takes us on a journey with this story. You can feel the attraction, the pain, the joy in these characters. The characters also act differently than what we would expect. I say this because we expect Amelia to stay super polished all the time, because that is how she would want to be perceived, but in reality, she hasn’t entirely lost her roots and her own personality shows that. I really enjoyed that about her.

The cliffhanger on this book is nuts. It is NOT what I expected. And even though its a cliffhanger, it wasn’t as bad I always perceive a cliffhanger to be. Knowing the next book is only a couple months away also plays into me not minding the cliffhanger. I think a lot of us have the stigma around cliffhangers and I’ve totally been there; you read an amazing book, it ends in a cliffhanger and then its a year before the next book comes out. This book is not that. So no need to worry.

Overall, I would recommend this book. It takes concepts that we have seen before and totally flips it around. I admired the author’s creativity, but also that she kept things believable. I cannot wait to see how this story concludes!

Jared studied the caramel-skinned, buxom beauty in front of him with undisguised appreciation. He’d noticed her the moment she’d stepped into the ballroom with Max’s fiancée.
He dealt a new hand without asking, unwilling to let her escape. She’d been the reason he told his niece to take a break. Sensuality radiated from each of her curves, and he wanted to get his hands on her.
She swiped the tip of her pink tongue over her plump bottom lip and frowned at her cards.
“It’s okay. Not everyone’s luck holds in these card games.” He wanted to smack himself after the words came out, but fuck if he wasn’t dying to hear her voice again. The husky tone had caressed his cock in a feather-light touch.
Her eyes were filled with amusement when she glanced up at him. “I know.” She wiggled in her seat. His thoughts went straight to the gutter. “I don’t worry too much about winning.”
She flipped another perfect game. Her pouty lips tipped up in a sexy come-hither grin. Fuck! He wanted to kiss her, touch her. Hell, he wanted to slide his hands up and down every curve he saw.
Of course, he’d probably end up getting smacked for being fresh. But he was damn close to believing it would be worth the sting of her hand on his face to kiss her, if only to get a taste.
“Nice, but it won’t last.” Desire thrummed through his body each time their gazes met. Arousal spiked and his cock hardened to an uncomfortable degree.
“Oh?” She lifted her dark brows and curled her lip in a cheeky grin. Challenge filled her eyes. “What’s your name?”
He grinned at the flash of fire he saw in her gaze. “Jared. Jared Thomas.”
She leaned forward, her breasts straining against her flimsy low-cut top. “Well, Jared, care to make it more interesting?”
Hell yes! But first he needed to know who the sexy siren was that would be gracing his bed that night. “What’s your name?”
He watched her nibble her plump bottom lip before answering. “Luciana Rivas.”
Mastering the nearly overpowering urge to grab her by the hand and haul her out of there was not an easy task. He noticed her empty champagne flute and motioned a passing waiter to hand her a full glass. She took a sip of the bubbly.
He watched her lick her lips again, lips he kept picturing wrapped around his cock, sucking him into her hot mouth. He leaned forward on the table, closer to her, and inhaled. The sexy, light scent tickling his nostrils made him think of satin sheets and sweaty bodies. He’d never wanted a woman this quickly.
Something inside him roared to life and urged him to toss her over his shoulder and take her to his bed, fuck her all night, watch her face when she screamed his name and finally, come deep inside her and take her as his in every sense of the word.
If his balls weren’t already in agreement with his dick, he might worry, but right now, his brain and all other body parts wanted her under him, over him and taking him deep.
“What do you have in mind?” he asked.
Their gazes met. Arousal flickered to life in the depths of her whiskey-brown eyes. The longer they stared at each other, the brighter it blazed, beckoning him closer. His cock pressed at the zipper of his dress pants, ready for action. Hell, he sure was glad he was behind the table, because no matter how good his poker face, he wouldn’t be able to hide that bit of evidence from her.
She shrugged. It was a dainty, sexy lift of her shoulders that pushed her breasts farther up her neckline. “You seem to be the expert here.”
He narrowed his eyes. She sounded like she was making fun of him, but she couldn’t possibly know he was anything other than a hired table attendant.
“I wouldn’t call myself a professional.” Oh yeah, he was a lying bastard, all right. “But I have experience.”
Her gaze latched onto his lips and slowly traveled up to meet his. He ground his teeth and fought the cock-hardening look she gave him. She licked her lips. “Let’s see if you’re right in your assumption that my luck won’t last.”
“What’s in it for me, gorgeous?”
She leaned closer. Their faces were only a foot apart now.
“What do you want?”
You. Now. Taking my cock. Taking my cum. Forever. Having my children. Being mine!
He should be worried over where his mind was going, but he couldn’t be. He was too busy staring at her mouth. He wanted to close the distance, to taste her plump red lips and allow her sexy perfume to fill his lungs. “Alone time…” He watched her eyes widen before he finished. “With you.”
The interest in her eyes grew until her pupils dilated with arousal. She gulped but didn’t respond. He decided to taunt her into agreeing, into giving in to his wishes.

Lucas by Jay McLean

Lucas by Jay McLean

In a sprint, every millisecond counts.
When you’re waiting for love, those milliseconds can feel like eons.

High school senior Lucas Preston has it all: star of the track team, a scholarship waiting for him, an apartment to himself and a revolving door of girlfriends. He also has an older sister, five younger brothers and a father who relies on him to make sure those brothers don’t kill each other.

His saving grace? Lois “Laney” Sanders, a girl he started to fall in like with when he was just eleven.
A girl who became his best friend, his confidant, his courage.

It took only sixteen clicks and eight seconds for Lucas to realize that his like for Laney had turned into love.
Eight life-changing seconds.
It’s also the exact length of time it took to lose her.

I’ve heard so many wonderful things about books by Jay McLean. I hear people rave about them and now I finally got to try one for myself. Based on what other readers have said, we do see Lucas in the “More Than” series, (his sister Lucy is in that series) and now Lucas is finally getting his own story.
Lucas meets Lois (who becomes Laney for Lois Lane) when he’s eleven years old. Laney and her dad have moved in nearby and her dad works for Lucas’ dad’s construction company. They immediately become close friends, but as the years tick by, things start to change.
Both Laney and Lucas are head over heels for each other, but neither one is sure their feelings are returned. So neither really says anything about it. They do delve into this murkiness on a few occasions but things always seem to fall apart.
One aspect of this book that I found myself marveling at over and over again was just how much this book came to life. The author made me feel like I was right there with Lucas and Laney, to the point that I was actually wanting to respond TO the characters. Even the descriptions of their surroundings and internal dialogue was incredibly descriptive and allowed me to immerse myself in the story.
The ending of this story is incredible. I did NOT see some of the twists coming, but they did make sense.
I would absolutely recommend this book. This story is extremely well-written and a fantastic tale of friends to lovers, sprinkled with memories and stories from the past. Our characters experience tragedy but they also experience true, all-consuming love.
