Bend by Molly McLain

The Hardass

Focused and in control at all times. Most people think I’m a prick–and I’ll be the first to admit that’s probably true. But I’d rather be a take-no-shit cop than the kind of man genetics says I should be. You break the law, you pay the price. I don’t give a damn if you’re the captain’s daughter or the Queen of friggin’ England.

The Princess

I have no patience for the cocky men my father oversees. Or maybe it’s just Sergeant Hardass who gets under my skin. Not only is he sexy as sin, he refuses to cut me a break. And now I have to work with the arrogant jerk.

I shouldn’t want him, but a secret part of me craves his unforgiving edge. He could give me everything I need, but, first, I have to break down his walls.

I have to make him bend.

Oh my gosh…I am absolutely LOVING this book. I am fairly certain that if I didn’t take breaks while reading, my kindle would have honestly exploded from heat this story packs.

Let me start by saying one of my favorite aspects of this book is that we take the concept of the hot male cop to a whole new level. We’ve seen the protective, sexy cop, but Sergeant Trent Clark takes it to a whole other level. Holy smokes!

Then we have Kinsey Malloy, the daughter of the captain. Kinsey is not what you expect in the heroine at all. She is hard-headed, strong, and intelligent. The reason I liked this juxtaposition was because a lot of times, we see the cop protecting the more meek female character. In this case, Kinsey has a lot of personality and she is not afraid to be bold. She just doesn’t always choose to show it.

For me, Kinsey was really the star of this book. The way she is throwing Trent for a loop was really one of my favorite parts of the story. Trent has always been attracted to Kinsey, but he stereotyped her into this prim and proper woman. When the reality is so far from that.

This book is only 154 pages long, according to Amazon. The reason I mention this fact is that even though the story is a bit shorter, Molly McLain manages to keep this story moving quickly. This story has complexities to it, but I never felt like anything was left unfinished.

I would absolutely recommend this book. The author has crafted a fast-paced, yet complex story about two people who come together in a way that seems normal, but is unlike other stories I’ve read. The sex scenes in this story are smoldering hot and I cannot wait for the next book in the Vegas Heat Series.

Absolute Trust by Piper J. Drake

LOVE IS THE GREATEST RISK OF ALL

After multiple tours of duty, Brandon Forte returns to his hometown on a personal mission: to open a facility for military service dogs like Haydn, a German shepherd who’s seen his share of combat and loss. It also brings him back to Sophie Kim, a beacon of light in his life . . . and the one woman he can’t have. But Forte’s success means he’s made enemies in high places. Enemies who are now after Sophie . . .

When Forte enlisted and left without saying goodbye, Sophie did her best to move on. But with her first love back in town, looking sexier than ever, she’s constantly reminded of what they could have had. Then after he risks himself for her, Sophie realizes she’ll have to put her life in the hands of the man who broke her heart, knowing the danger -and the sparks between them- could consume them both.

I have a confession to make. I have multiple Piper J. Drake books and this is the first one I’ve read. And the fact that I enjoyed this book so much had me digging out all my other Piper J. Drake books so I can run back and read them ASAP.

As a new reader to this author, I was really impressed by this book. I thought that the author did a great job keeping the story moving along, all without getting too deep into one faction of the story vs another.

One great example of that is the past relationship between Sophie and Brandon. From the synopsis, we know Brandon left without saying goodbye. There is obviously a point in the story where our hero has to confront the choices he made, and our heroine has to confront what his choices mean in regards to her. I loved how this was done. Yes, it was mentioned a few times, but then the characters talk about it. It wasn’t done in a way that they kept putting off over and over, and then it led to unnecessary drama.

Because I am new to this author, I am not sure if she incorporates this into other stories or not. (I am assuming she does) But one thing I really appreciated in this story was that we see people of different races and nationalities. Its not like there is a random person thrown into the story either. Our heroine, Sophie, is Korean. I loved hearing about her family, their values, the foods she enjoyed. I really loved seeing that side of her shine through. As a person of color, I loved that this is in the story, but it never felt like it was trying to make some political or motivated point. These are just who the characters are.

If I had a criticism, it would be there was a bit much of different military verbiage and then the going back and forth using first names and last names. Only because I am not familiar with the entire cast of characters, it made it a bit confusing in a couple parts. This was minor though and not something that would deter me from this author.

I am really happy I finally got to have the time to read one of my Piper J. Drake books. I kept trying to put this book down (why do I need to live real life anyway?) but I couldn’t. I loved the characters, the romance scenes in this story were absolutely on point, and I loved the incorporation of a wide cast of characters: dogs, cats, and humans. Now I need to wrap this up so I can start reading “Extreme Honor” by this author.

Dillon Keck knew Ashlyn Mayson was drunk when she suggested they get married. He knew he should have taken her back to their hotel room and put her to bed. Instead, he did what he had been craving to do since the moment they met.

Claim her as his.

Waking up married in Vegas isn’t something Ashlyn Mayson ever thought would happen to her. Having Dillon, her boss, a man she thinks is a dick, insist they stay married is absurd, but every time he touches her, she gets lost in him and wonders if maybe they are meant to be together.

But someone isn’t happy for Dillon and Ashlyn and their new found romance, and they’re willing to do anything to keep them apart. Even commit murder.

Every time I read anything by Aurora Rose Reynolds, I think its my favorite book she’s ever written. Then she writes another book and that one becomes my favorite. “Until Ashlyn” is keeping this tradition alive.

I loved this book from page one. If I had to sum this story up with one word, describing why I loved it, I would choose “balance”. This author has an incredible knack for creating the amazing alpha male, but not making him overwhelming. The females in her stories are intelligent and independent, but yet can have the men in their life support and love them. Its a beautiful balance that makes these stories work for me.

Dillon and Ashlyn have been working together for awhile. Ashlyn finds Dillon attractive, but also think he’s a jerk (for a lack of better words). Dillon, on the other hand, is very attracted to Ashlyn, but she has no idea. A trip to a dental conference in Las Vegas, a hotel mix-up, and some cocktails lead Dillon and Ashlyn to wedded bliss via the Las Vegas strip.

Ashlyn and Dillon have smoldering chemistry. The love scenes in this book are so incredibly sexy, and yet they aren’t overdone. This couple got married without ever dating and so some of the story is their dynamic of working together (in a relationship aspect) and it was hilarious. Dillon is composed and maybe a bit rigid. Ashlyn is much more outgoing and feisty. I enjoyed watching them push and pull each other back and forth, out of one comfort zone, and into a new one.

I know in many books from Aurora Rose Reynolds, we see a lot of the family members from past books. I’ve always loved this facet, but this book was really exceptional because we get to see so much of Dillon’s family melding with Ashlyn and her family. It was enjoyable to see these characters come together and to watch new friendships growing. I’m honestly hoping my husband and I can somehow join this fictional family. I just love this cast of characters so much.

There is some mystery in this story. There are a few people that aren’t happy about Dillon and Ashlyn being a couple. Anytime I read a story with even a slight hint of mystery, I get so caught up in trying to figure out who the guilty party is. Because this author has such great balance in her story, I was kept on my toes the entire time, but I also was able to enjoy the whole story. I think some books get you caught up in one aspect and its hard to see what else is even happening. I appreciated there is mystery, but also the love story, the families, etc. are able to be fully enjoyed at the same time.

I can’t recommend this book, and author, enough. I have loved Aurora Rose Reynolds and her work for awhile now. Ashlyn and Dillon were an incredible couple and I am already super impatient to see which couple we get to spend more time with next.

Excerpt
Why they call it a farmhouse is beyond me. That word paints an image of a little white house with a chicken coop. This is a Southern plantation. A huge, wide porch with pillars looks to encompass the entire place. Mums line whiskey barrels and give the clean exterior pops of burgundy, orange, and yellow. It’s breathtaking.

“This is gorgeous,” I breathe as it comes into full view. “Not what I expected.”

“This is my second favorite place in the world,” he whispers against my ear.

“Second? What could be more perfect that this?”

“Inside you.”

Before he can pull away, I turn my face so my lips capture his. He deepens the kiss, our lips working against one another in perfect harmony. As we pull away, breathless, he grins. “Thank you for coming.”

“I’ll ensure you come later,” I promise.

“Naughty girl,” he chuckles as the car rolls to a stop. “I like it.”

“You will.”

Being released from prison, Xander Evans needs to find the sister he hasn’t seen in years. She holds the key to healing a past he hasn’t come to terms with. That desire has him making the difficult decision of leaving Paige behind. When he discovers just how much trouble Gabriela is in, he fears even he can’t help her survive.

After an ugly separation from the Army, Gabriela Michaels fell in with the wrong crowd. With a drug deal gone wrong, she now has a month to pay back more money than she ever could… or see her life come to a swift end.

Her former flame, Shane Presley, must unite a band of Broken Outlaws to save the woman he’s always loved.

You know, one of my favorite things about new authors is watching them grow. Actually, I love that about any author. When they stretch their wings, challenge themselves, take on new topics. I can honestly say that my respect for BT Urruela, as an author, really grew with this book.

The first thing I will say is that if you read “Into the Nothing” when it originally came out, a few things have changed. I do believe those updates are already online, so if you have it, my impression is you can get the updated version. The reason I mention this is because if you just start “Into the Blood”, some of the timeline will seem off to you.

Normally, I wouldn’t like this but in this case, I thought it was amazing the author did that. One thing that really bothered me in “Into The Nothing” was that Paige’s dad has an ending that I felt needed more time dedicated to it. That is one of the changes and to me, it was so appreciated and worth it. Jack is a really pivotal character to both Paige and Xander.

Moving on to Gabi and Shane. These two were dynamic. We meet Gabi when she has gotten herself into a royally huge mess. I am talking very serious trouble. Not like what we might normally see in a “romance” novel.

There is a trigger warning at the beginning of this book because there is darkness to it. I normally don’t like darker books just because they bring me down. I enjoy reading to escape. However, that said, I do enjoy the darkness when it actually makes sense. And in this story, it made absolute sense. When we learn everything that Gabi has experienced, it made me think. I distinctly remember feeling terrible for her and everything she went through. I wanted to literally find her and help her. Its been awhile since a book brought out that emotion for me.

This book also felt a lot more like the author to me, if that makes sense. This was definitely more action and grit and I felt like that fit this author a lot better. I enjoyed reading a story from a man’s perspective because men do look at things differently. Even if they feel the exact same emotions as women, they can express that wildly different.

Overall, I loved this book. I felt the changes that the author applied to the first book in the series was valuable and it added to the overall story for this group of characters. Gabi and Shane are not a cookie-cutter couple. They were crass, rough around the edges, and I was enamored with them. An absolutely fantastic second book in the Broken Outlaws series.

It’s a Swing and a GRAND SLAM!!!!

I’d say its common knowledge that I love Adriana Locke and her writing. But this book was a homerun, pun fully intended.

I finished this book and found myself beaming at Linc and Dani’s love story. It was perfection.

I’m going to list a few of my favorite aspects of this book, but just know that I really loved the whole book. My review would be pages and pages long if I listed everything I liked. The first thing I really enjoyed was that Linc and Dani are really on the same page. I think sometimes, we see the guy with this incredible lust and desire for the woman, but we don’t always see the woman reciprocate that as carnally. Dani has no problem voicing her physical desires for Linc. Its not taboo, or uncomfortable for her. When Linc admires Dani, it was really easy for me to see why he was so attracted to her.

Lincoln is a really phenomenal character. I loved seeing him in a more introspective light. He’s at this pivotal point in his life where things are changing, and he’s seeing things differently. I think a lot of people go through that and I enjoyed seeing his journey through that. The best part for me is that he was already there. Meeting Dani, and falling for her, didn’t push him to that point.

Another facet that I loved is the incorporation of characters from other books, and even series, being subtly tied in. We obviously get to see Barrett, Ali, and Huxley (and the rest of the Landry family), but we also see tiny glimpses of the Gentry extended family, and Stone Lockhart from “Stoned” by Mandi Beck, and Johnny Outlaw from the Hard To Resist series by S.L. Scott. The reason I love these tie-ins is because its so subtle. Its a great treat to the reader who has read these books and knows these characters. But if you hadn’t read those other books, you wouldn’t know any different.

I truly cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed this book. When I finished, I was absolutely beaming because I was just so happy with the story. Adriana Locke gets better with each story she churns out.

I think the saying goes “never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” There are no strike outs in this book, only homeruns.

Screw him and his perfect resume.

And flawless face.

And delicious body.

And probably game-winning stamina. I’m going to be a mess today just thinking about it.

“Why was he in your office?” Macie asks, right as I was ready to mentally remove his clothes. “Oh my God, Danielle! I just pulled him up. Why can’t I be you? Just for a day?”

“I’m quite happy I’m me today,” I laugh. “He just walked off the elevator on the wrong floor and followed me to my office.”

“Why?”

“Does it matter? Now I’m sitting here with wet panties, his ‘Fuck me’ cologne filling my office, and all sorts of ideas as to what his body looks like under those sweatpants and t-shirt.”

The bell chimes as the front door closes behind me. I’m to my car in record speed. I need space. I need air. I need to think. When my phone buzzes right before I pull out of the parking lot, I know it’s Pepper and she’s not going to quit until I give her something to occupy her mind.

“Fine!” I nearly shout into the phone. “His cock is about ten inches, if I’m guessing, and he fucked me in about every position I could explain. My favorite, though, was the corkscrew. Not sure what that is? Google it.”

My finger goes to swipe off the call when I see the name on the screen and drop the phone. “Shit!” I cry, digging through the items on my passenger’s side floorboard until I find the glowing device.

My heart is pounding as I try to decide whether to end the call or talk to Lincoln. Mortified, I bring it to my ear and squeeze my eyes shut. He’s silent.

Maybe he didn’t hear. Please, God, don’t let him have heard that.

“Hello?” I eke out.

“I’d say ten inches is fair and I’ve made a note about the corkscrew. Glad I called,” he chuckles.
