This anthology is unlike anything I’ve read and I’ve actually been fairly conflicted on writing this review. Some aspects of this book I really loved and others just had me sort of shocked.
I am going to reference FSOG in this post and its as a baseline. Not comparing one to another but I know that for many readers, they are familiar with FSOG. With that said, this book is definitely more of a “true” BDSM in my opinion. We are seeing the characters in this anthology dabbling in things that I can honestly say I haven’t seen written about (breath play, whipping, water play, age play, etc). If you are a fan of these authors, you have probably read this work from them before, however, they are all new to me.
One of the first things I really enjoyed about this anthology is the idea to set the story in Washington D.C. I liked this because we do see so much ego in that area and so many people in powerful positions or who want to be powerful. It also added to the fact that Black Light is so exclusive and very concerned about their privacy and confidentiality. It made sense that these power players would want to be at Black Light.
Another facet I enjoyed was that this story is diverse. We see a lawyer, an actress, politician, lobbyist, bartender, and waitress all playing, among others. Everyone is also a little bit older. Again, this made sense to me. Black Light is not an inexpensive place to be at, and some of the kinks that these people are partaking in are not just something you discover on a whim, in particular regard to the Dominants. They know exactly what they are doing and how to manipulate a situation.
One thing I will say is that one story (Livia Grant) in the anthology does have a full book coming with it this spring. The reason I want to mention this is because it was the second story in the book and I was so bummed to not see the couple get some kind of closure. The other stories in this anthology aren’t like that. It makes sense to have a follow up book, it doesn’t take away the fact that I’m inpatient and just want the full story right away.
Overall, I enjoyed this read. I can say that at times, it was intense and I wanted to quit reading. And I say that as someone who is familiar with BDSM and was fairly familiar with most of the things mentioned here. But I wanted to see it through and I’m happy I did.
