Title: Bad Penny

Author: Staci Hart

Cover Designer: Quirkybird Designs

Photographer: Lauren Watson Perry

Synopsis

Nothing good comes after the third date.

See, date three is the crucial point when things get real, which is exactly why I bounce out the door, twiddling my fingers at whatever poor boy I’ve left behind. Because if I stick around, one of three things will happen: he’ll profess his undying love, he gets weird and stalky, or I’ll go crazy. Like, Sid and Nancy crazy. Like, chase-him-through-the-streets-begging-him-to-love-me crazy.

Seriously, it’s better for everyone this way.

So when I meet Bodie, I figure it’ll be the same as it ever was. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t put a single string on me. Doesn’t matter that he’s funny and smart and jacked and can play my body like a grand piano. Because even though I’m built for love, love has only carved me up like a Christmas ham.

Resistance is something I can only hang on to for so long, and he has persistence in spades. But my heart isn’t as safe as I want to believe, and neither is his. And the second I ignore my cardinal rule is the second I stand to lose him forever.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Dying Breath by Heather Graham

DyingBreath

Dying Breath by Heather Graham

Buried alive…

As a teenager, Vickie Preston survived an attack by a serial killer. That was the first time she saw a ghost. Now the city of Boston is being terrorized—someone is kidnapping women and burying them alive, but cruelly leaving a glimmer of hope for the authorities by sending a clue about their location. Vickie is pulled into the investigation when her name is mentioned in one of the notes. And as a historian, she has the knowledge to help uncover the graves the killer known as the Undertaker is choosing. But she also has another, unique lead: the spirit of one of the victims is appearing to her in dreams.

Special Agent Griffin Price is on the case for the Krewe of Hunters, the FBI’s special unit for paranormal investigators. He feels particularly protective of Vickie, since their shared past is connected to the threat that currently surrounds them. With the killer accelerating his plans, time is running out for more victims hidden around the city. Vickie is becoming closer with Griffin, but she’s getting too close to the danger, and every breath could be her last.

The Krewe of Hunters are back!!! (Insert me screaming with excitement here) Seriously, this is probably my favorite all-time series. I just cannot get enough.

Our story starts with 17 year old Vickie Preston babysitting baby Noah for the Ballantine family. What Vickie doesn’t know is that an escaped prison convict is hiding in the house. Until Dylan Ballantine gets her out of the house. But Dylan is a ghost…

This book will probably rank as one of my favorites from Heather Graham. It got my adrenaline running from the very beginning. Vickie later becomes a bit of a history buff and while Griffin was initially the officer who helped Vickie in the past, now he’s part of the Krewe of Hunters. I really enjoyed them as a couple, even when their feelings for each other wasn’t realized. I think of all couples that I’ve read, I felt like these two are some of most compatible I’ve seen. I know that might sound strange, but I feel like if I met Vickie and Griffin in real life, I’d want to set them up together.

Another facet that I love about all Heather Graham books that really shone in this book was the history. The reason Vickie is so vital to this investigation is that she’s a total history buff. She’s also incredibly intelligent. So as the Undertake is giving out clues, Vickie is busy solving the puzzle.

Heather Graham always delivers and so do the Krewe of Hunters. This series has been one of my all-time favorites for a long time now, and it continues to be. Graham knows what works but always keeps things fresh and keeps readers on their toes the entire time.

How do I love Rachel Van Dyken, let me count the ways. Sorry, but none of us have time for me to sit and list all the reasons that I love this author. She is an automatic one-click for me and has been for awhile.

One thing I have always loved about this author’s books is that they’re fast-paced and funny. Even when something sad is happening, there are moments of humor. This story is no different.

Austin and Thatch were hooking up before she caught him kissing someone else. (If you read “Cheater”, then you’ll have caught that scene in Avery and Lucas’ story; also, you don’t need to read “Cheater” to enjoy “Cheater’s Regret”). Austin is wallowing in her sorrow, and also her absolute heartbreak. If I thought Austin was real, I was ready to run and comfort her. My heart broke for her.

Thatch is a really complex character. One minute, I loved him. The next, I wanted to get revenge on him. Then I loved him. And back and forth. It was just crazy how yanked all over the place I felt. I personally loved that feeling because, as a reader, it helped me relate to Austin on a much deeper level. You could understand why she needed to let Thatch go, but yet, couldn’t.

Another factor that I really loved was seeing how others treated Austin. I know this might seem minor to other readers, but when I read “Cheater” and this book, I pictured Austin as this stunning beauty. And I think she is. But when we see her deal with insecurities and others putting her down, or only being interested in her due to who her father is (the mayor), you really start to see why Thatch is so special in how he treats Austin.

I really loved this book. It took me high and low and I’d do it all over again.

The Girl Who Knew Too Much by Amanda Quick

TheGirlWhoKnewTooMuch

The Girl Who Knew Too Much by Amanda Quick

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Amanda Quick, the bestselling author of ’Til Death Do Us Part, transports readers to 1930s California, where glamour and seduction spawn a multitude of sins…

When Hollywood moguls and stars want privacy, they head to an idyllic small town on the coast, where the exclusive Burning Cove Hotel caters to their every need. It’s where reporter Irene Glasson finds herself staring down at a beautiful actress at the bottom of a pool…

The dead woman had a red-hot secret about up-and-coming leading man Nick Tremayne, a scoop that Irene couldn’t resist—especially since she’s just a rookie at a third-rate gossip rag. But now Irene’s investigation into the drowning threatens to tear down the wall of illusion that is so deftly built around the famous actor, and there are powerful men willing to do anything to protect their investment.

Seeking the truth, Irene finds herself drawn to a master of deception. Oliver Ward was once a world-famous magician—until he was mysteriously injured during his last performance. Now the owner of the Burning Cove Hotel, he can’t let scandal threaten his livelihood, even if it means trusting Irene, a woman who seems to have appeared in Los Angeles out of nowhere four months ago…

With Oliver’s help, Irene soon learns that the glamorous paradise of Burning Cove hides dark and dangerous secrets. And that the past—always just out of sight—could drag them both under…

This book had me in awe of the author. Talk about incredible writing! Amanda Quick literally takes the reader back in time to the 1930’s. Of all of the books I have read, this one truly transformed my entire surroundings into California, and the Hollywood scene, of the past. It was a remarkable experience.

Our heroine, Irene Glasson, is the rookie with a gossip paper. But her latest story about a dead actress connected to a famous actor has touched the wrong nerve with the wrong people.

One of the biggest factors that I enjoyed about this story is that while there are many twists and turns, I never felt confused or lost. In the past, I’ve somewhat stayed away from books considered in the historical genre because there is usually a language difference, on top of the names and locations maybe not being as familiar, thus making it harder for me to keep track of all of our players in the book. The fact that in this story, Irene Glasson isn’t even Irene Glasson, the above mentioned point is even more true for me.

I really enjoyed this story. It kept me on my toes the entire time. You aren’t really sure who is good and who is bad in this story. Someone you think is good can end up doing something entirely heinous and the bad ones are only worse.

If you enjoy historicals, or you enjoy Amanda Quick already, you will enjoy this story a lot. I have only read a few books from this particular author and I have always found myself transported back in time and I’ve loved it every single time.

Grand Slam by Heidi McLaughlin

McLaughlin_GrandSlam_TR

Win the game. Lose your heart.

Everyone knows who I am and that I could have any female fan I want. That’s supposed to be the “perk” of playing left field for the Boston Renegades. But I don’t want just any woman; I want her.

She should be just another face in the crowd, but I can’t stop thinking about the one night we spent together- and her look of regret the morning after.

Because Saylor Blackwell is the kind of woman who haunts a man. Smart, sexy as hell, and one of the best managers in the business. She’s every ballplayer’s dream woman. And I’d do anything to make things right with her.

I’m done sitting on the bench when it comes to Saylor Blackwell. Time to swing for the fences.

THE BOYS OF SUMMER SERIES

THIRD BASE, #1

HOME RUN, #2

GRAND SLAM, #3

Series Page on Goodreads

This series has easily been one of my favorites. I am an avid baseball fan and to see my favorite sport transformed into the romance scene, while still maintaining its sports integrity has been so amazing to read.

With that said, I think the author saved the best for last because this story ripped my heart out. And it was so fitting. These books can be read as standalones, if you wanted to. But I will tell you that reading Ethan and Cooper’s stories first (Third Base & Home Run) will make Travis’ story so much sweeter for you.

In the other books, and even in the start of this story, we see Travis Kidd, player on many levels. Travis isn’t afraid to enjoy the “perks” that come with being an athlete. But then there is another side of Travis that readers have never met before. The serious, caring, attentive side. The side that wants more from his life than just random women in and out.

Saylor Blackwell would like to be immune to Travis Kidd. But she isn’t. I really loved Saylor’s character because she has been dealt some serious blows in life, but it never defines her. One of my favorite aspects of Saylor is that her problems are real. As I got to know Saylor, I felt like I could find many other women, or men, who’d been dealt the same hand and had to rise up over it. I appreciated that the author let Saylor shine, and didn’t try to make her into someone you just felt sorry for. I felt immense respect and admiration for her.

If you love this author, or sports romance, you will love this book. Its intense on a variety of levels, and the chemistry between Saylor and Travis was indescribable.

I can’t say how much I loved this book. Heidi McLaughlin knows baseball and romance, and combining the two has truly been a Grand Slam for her readers.

Ellie Pagan has a list of reasons to stay away from Ford Landry.

Ford gets Ellie isn’t his biggest fan. He just doesn’t care.

Standing in front of him, giving him hell, she’s even prettier than he remembered. All he can think about is how she felt in his arms, the taste of her kiss, the sound of her giggle in the middle of the night. Ugh, you guys. This series is slaying me. Just when I think it can’t get better, it does. And this is coming from someone who doesn’t like second-chance romances. I don’t like friends to lovers. And then BAM! This book comes along and makes me like everything. This author!!

I truly can say I loved the love story in this book. I think one of the main reasons that this book worked for me, even with there being tropes that I don’t normally love, is because we really do get the love story. Ford and Ellie have a history; parts of which are great and parts that are not so great. They have to work through it. The author recognizes this, and even as Ellie and Ford are reconnecting, past resentments and feelings still linger. This is more from Ellie than Ford, but it makes sense. I think I appreciated the honesty of that. When you have a strong history with someone, you aren’t able to just let things go so easily.

Ford is probably one of my favorite characters. If you’ve read the other books in the Landry series, you’ve met Ford and we see glimpses of him and know that he’s seen a lot. Because of that, his personality is not as hesitant as that of his brothers. Ford is all in with Ellie. Again, I found myself enjoying this because with everything that Ford has experienced, this makes sense. Ford also has a unique relationship with his twin sisters, one which we don’t really experience in the other books. Now yes, some of this is a bit of foreshadowing since Sienna and Camilla get their own books later, but we get the depth of character from Ford in these interactions.

Adriana Locke is one of my all-time favorite authors. Her characters and writing always mange to pull at my soul, but never pull me so far down that I can’t get back up. If you love this author already, be prepared to keep on loving her. If you’re new to this author, its time to get on board.
